Museum of Speed, Pendine
The need for better performing buildings is clear and this is epitomised by the Passiv Haus standard, with challenging targets for annual energy usage and air-tightness.
At WB Timber Innovations we have seen our clients looking to meet increasingly challenging low energy standards and we have therefore developed an offsite manufactured timber frame wall and roof panel system for projects of this nature.
In addition to the inherent thermal performance necessary, achieved by using twin or ‘Larsen’ Studs, the natural cellulose insulation allows buildings to breathe and improves indoor air quality whilst eliminating the potential for interstitial condensation in the fabric of the building.
The first scheme incorporating our ‘Passiv Innovations’ system is the new Museum of Speed and PassivHaus Hotel at Pendine Sands in Carmarthenshire. The project is a brand-new tourist attraction to house ‘Babs’ the land speed record setting car (as pictured), so speed was very much of the essence throughout the build and its’ specification!
This project was given ‘Special Recognition’ at the Constructing Excellence Wales awards. Here are the judges comments:
“Off site and modern methods of construction point to the future of our industry. We felt that this Timber Innovations submission is a real breath of fresh air – an intelligent offsite solution which is combining pre-manufactured approaches, with a real intent to optimise its low carbon outputs: not just in terms of operational carbon, but also taking an integrated approach to natural, breathable materials, with a very good low embodied carbon factor. It couldn’t edge the winner – but it is worth checking out.”
